In case you want to do more on our trip in November than laze around the pool imbibing on adult bevvys, here are things I’ve done that made me fall in love with Mexico!
1. Explore the Ancient Ruins of Tulum
One of the most breathtaking archaeological sites in Mexico is Tulum Ruins. Perched on cliffs overlooking the Caribbean Sea, these ancient Mayan ruins offer both history and stunning ocean views. You will walk through temples, learn about Mayan civilization, and then cool off on the beautiful beach below the ruins. It is the only Mayan ruin located directly on the coast and the photo opportunities are endless.
2. Swim in Magical Cenotes
The Riviera Maya is home to thousands of cenotes, natural freshwater sinkholes formed in limestone rock. My favorite is Rio Secreto. I was blessed by a Mayan shaman prior to entering and our guides had us turn off our headlamps, hold hands and float silently for 5 minutes. It was a beautiful, spiritual experience.
3. Visit the World Wonder of Chichén Itzá
Like Tulum, but not on the coast is Chichén Itzá. Once a powerful Mayan city, it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. The most iconic structure is the pyramid known as El Castillo. Built with precise astronomical alignment, sunlight creates a shadow on the pyramid that looks like a serpent slithering down the stairs, symbolizing Kukulcán descending to Earth, during the spring and autumn equinox.
4. Snorkel or Dive in the Mesoamerican Reef
Just off the coast lies the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, the second-largest coral reef system in the world. Snorkeling or scuba diving here allows you to see colorful coral formations, sea turtles, tropical fish and even the elusive ray or nurse shark now and then.
5. Experience Eco-Adventure Parks
For thrill seekers and families alike, eco-parks are a huge attraction in the region. One of the most famous is Xcaret Park. Activities include underground river swimming, cultural performances, wildlife encounters and snorkeling lagoons. It’s a perfect mix of nature, adventure, and Mexican culture.
