The Joy of Taking it Slow

This is one of my favorite pictures I’ve ever taken. This is my friend Bridget. We were heading out for a day of snorkeling in Belize when she simply stopped. She stood there for a few minutes then looked back at me, smiled and said “I know, right?” Yeah. I know, Bridget!

We live in a world that seems to reward speed. Fast flights. Fast trains. Fast Wi-Fi. Fast food. We try to cram as much as possible into our vacations, determined to see every landmark, visit every city, and check every box on our list. I know we do because it’s what I used to do. That feeling that you’ve got to see it all is real.

But what if your next vacation was different? What if, instead of trying to see it all, you slowed down? What if you were more intentional with how you travel? Take the scenic train through the Alps because the journey is beautiful. Spend an afternoon at a café in Paris. Linger over a glass of wine in Tuscany as the sun sets over the vineyards. Give yourself the freedom to say, “Let’s stay a little longer.”

Believe it or not, you don’t have to see everything. The magic happens between the must-sees. Yep, the famous sites are famous for a reason. You MUST see the Eiffel Tower, the Colosseum in Rome, the canals of Venice and Amsterdam. But make the conscious choice to stay in one place for a few days. You’ll discover your favorite café, a local band, and you’ll begin to understand how people live, not just how tourists visit.

And, hello, it’s called a vacation for a reason. Coming home exhausted and needing a vacation from your vacation defeats the purpose. If every day starts with an early wake-up call and ends with a late dinner, while you’re constantly packing and unpacking, your trip can start to feel like a marathon. Choose to sleep in, enjoy a long breakfast, take a yoga class, or even, wait for it, do nothing! Yes, that’s allowed on vacation!

SJTC’s small group tours take all of this into consideration. Our cruise in January 2027 explores 4 lovely ports, but has 4 utterly free days at sea to relax and unwind. Our trip to Ireland in May 2027 has tons of free time built into the itinerary with optional activities you can do or not do. On our river cruise in November 2027, your hotel travels with you, so there’s no need to pack and unpack every day and you wake up in a new destination each morning. You aren’t stuck in traffic. You’re not rushing to your next destination. You’re simply enjoying the journey.

If you’re planning the journey yourself, here are my suggestions. Stay an extra night. Pick fewer destinations. Take the scenic route. Eat like a local. Take the pics, then put away the phone. The greatest luxury is time itself, so linger over dinner, watch the sunset, and relax.
